Hello fellow bloggers! I'm so sorry for getting to this so late in the week. I've been preparing for my Latin exam through UT and it's been something of a great challenge for me. You should always feel free to post on here, regardless of whether or not there's a new discussion topic. If you have questions or comments you want to share concerning the IDS program, school, or activities in general, feel free to share that at any time.
That being said, let's discuss how your life has been enhanced by the insights you have gained from your coursework thus far. Do you feel better prepared for the challenges you face? (ie: gradschool, GRE testing, job hunting, etc..)
Happy blogging!
Molly

Hello! This thing is kind of confusing for me. I have tried to post a couple of times but for some reason it wouldn't let me. Oh well , I am trying again.
ReplyDeleteI am finding it a little bit easier to explain what my degree is to people. After I explain what my degree is ,they seem to be more interested in what I am doing.
I have recently talked to someone who works for the state who has a degree similar to what I am doing. She is in one of the fields that I would like to work in , so she has been giving me some advice and has extended her help to me when I am finished with school.
I am curious as to how everyone else describes this degree and what job opportunities you may be looking into. Also does anyone do any volunteer work?

Antonia- I am also finding it a little easier to describe my degree. I say it is "kind of like a combination degree, a combination of subjects I am most interested in."
ReplyDeleteMolly and Antonia- How you guys describe the program when talking to people who know nothing about it?
As for job opportunities, I currently don't have any at the moment. I have a young baby and me and my husband both agree that having a stay at home parent is good and right now that parent is me. However, I have been considering working from home and looking into careers like that. I am thinking about writing from home but my skills need to improved and I need to discover for who and what I want to write about. If is challenging finding something legitimate.
Stephanie-
ReplyDeleteI describe the degree as like a combination degree to people who look at me like I am crazy. I think its funny sometimes people pretend to know what your talking about even though they have no idea!

ReplyDeleteI generally tell people that my degree is in interdisciplinary studies which is a field that allows me to cross a variety of traditional studies with one another. In my case, Humanities, Behavioral Social Sciences and American Studies. Unfortunately, a lot of people I talk to don't understand the functions of the program, so I wind up claiming a degree in Humanities in defeat. However, many people I've talked with seem genuinely interested in learning more about the program and I can expand on it by telling them about how interdisciplinary studies program is all about progression and integration. By bridging two or more program areas, it allows students to connect the different perspectives of those areas and (hopefully) achieve a greater knowledge in those chosen disciplines.
ReplyDeleteI think the program is becoming more popular in the U.S. and as it does so, more people are becoming aware of its name and function, though I admit to not having any simple way of describing the program myself.
Great question, Antonia!
